MNI BRIEF: Existential Threat For 1-in-5 German Firms: Ifo

MNI (London)
LONDON (MNI)

One in five German companies fear for their survival in the fallout from the Covid-19, a survey by the Ifo Institute shows, with the group's head of surveys saying those with liquidity issues are the most fearful for their future.

Unsurprisingly, the retail sector and other face-to-face services providers felt particularly at risk in February with 34.5% and 26.3%, respectively, of companies worrying they might not survive, Klaus Wohlrabe notedd. The travel industry, one of the hardest hit sectors during the pandemic, reported the most acute fears, while the mechanical engineering industry was relatively relaxed.

The bankruptcy fears fall in with concerns at the ECB over growing bank loan problems as support measures are withdrawn in coming months
