MNI BRIEF: RBNZ Announces New Assistant Governor Karen Silk

MNI (Sydney)
SYDNEY (MNI)

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has made another key appointment, announcing former Westpac executive Karen Silk as the Assistant Governor and General Manager of Economics, Financial Markets and Banking and a member of the Monetary Policy Committee.

Silk fills the role previously held by Christian Hawkesby, who became Deputy Governor of RBNZ in January 2022.

Within the last month, three other Assistant Governor appointments have made to the RBNZ, so with the appointment of Silk, all eight Executive Leadership roles are filled. Five of them are existing senior staff at the Bank.

The announcement comes as the RBNZ is set to continue its tightening cycle at its next meeting on Feb. 23. NZ inflation data for the fourth quarter of 2021 released on Thursday surprised on the upside at 5.9%, the fastest in more than 31 years, see: MNI INTERVIEW: "Tailwind" Means Fewer RBNZ Hikes - Ex-Official.
