MNI BRIEF: Scotland Moving Into Tougher Lockdown From Tuesday

LONDON (MNI)

Scotland will bring in tougher national lockdown measures from January 5, effectively returning the nation to the same level of social distancing first seen in March and April, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said Monday.

Sturgeon said it was necessary for Scotland to move quickly to try and get ahead of the curve that has seen a large increase in Covid-19 cases in recent weeks. Scotland has autonomy within the UK for bringing in control measures to fight the virus, but it seems likely other parts of the UK will go into tougher lockdown conditions soon, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying tighter restrictions will be announced "in due course".
