Free AccessMNI BRIEF: Spain To Request EUR84 Bln NextGenEU Loans
The Spanish government will publish documentation on Tuesday detailing its request for the maximum EUR84 billion in loans available to it under the NextGenerationEU programme, together with grants, a source from the Spanish finance ministry told MNI.
Madrid has been in talks with Brussels for months over changes to its National Recovery Plan to justify a request of these funds, and the document will be published after approval by the Council of Ministers later today, the source said.
The amendments to the plan adds new targets, but they are not more challenging than those originally included, the source said.
A European Commission will take note of Spain’s request, an official in Brussels said.
So far Spain has met targets under Plan, though it has recognised that it will be difficult to spend all the available NextGenEU money by the 2026 deadline, and it has joined Italy in calling for an extension. (See MNI: Spain, Italy Discuss Joint Push For NGEU Extension-Source)
