MNI BRIEF: Top Chinese Diplomat Urges Restoring Sino-US Ties

BEIJING (MNI)

China and the U.S. should restore ties by resuming exchanges, managing differences, and working together on economic and trade issues as well as climate change, a top Chinese diplomat said on Tuesday.

The U.S. should not see China as a major strategic competitor or even as an opponent as China has never interfered in U.S. internal affairs or exported its development model or engaged in ideological confrontation, and has never sought to challenge or replace the U.S. or divide influence, said Yang Jiechi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee at an online forum organized by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. Yang is the highest-ranking Chinese leader to speak on China-U.S. relations since Joe Biden took office.

China is willing to strengthen macroeconomic policy coordination with the U.S. to maintain the security of the global supply chain, said Yang, adding that the two countries can cooperate on developing new energy and promoting low-carbon sustainable development.
