MNI BRIEF: Trudeau-NDP Deal Sees No Canada Election Until 2025

OTTAWA (MNI)

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday he has an agreement with the NDP for support on confidence bills like budgets that will likely keep his minority Liberal government in place for a regular full term into 2025 rather than leaving him vulnerable to a snap election.

The government will advance NDP priorities such as a publicly-funded national dental plan, Trudeau said at a press conference. The Liberals need one of three opposition parties to support major legislation and stay in power after last year's election produced a minority, which often lasts two years.

The deal comes as a federal budget is expected in the next few weeks that may continue deficit spending amid rapid inflation, in an economy largely restored following the Covid recession. “The government can function with predictability and stability” now, Trudeau said, “and get things done for Canadians.”
