MNI DATA BRIEF: UK Manufacturing Output At 3-1/2 Yr High: CBI

LONDON (MNI)

UK manufacturing activity grew strongly in May with output rising at the fastest rate since December 2018, recording the first growth in output in two years, data published Thursday by the CBI showed. "These latest figures are very positive, and it is great to see the sector bounce back from the bleak situation we saw last year," Tom Crotty, Group Director at INEOS and Chair of the CBI Manufacturing Council, said, although he recognised the ongoing challenges.

Total order books surged to 17 in May, up from -8 recorded in April and showing the strongest increase since December 2017, according to the CBI's latest Industrial Trends survey. Export order books only ticked up 1pt to -17, but continued to show the best result since the start of the pandemic.

Firm's expect output prices to rise significantly in the next three months. The indicator rose to 38 in May, its strongest level since January 2018. At the same time, stock adequacy deteriorated to the lowest level since July 2017 and was linked to current supply chain issues.
