MNI BRIEF: Jan UK Pay Awards Lowest Since Aug

LONDON (MNI)

UK headline pay awards fell in January to the lowest level since August, the latest XpertHR survey showed, reflecting the "continuing uncertainty in which businesses are operating." according to survey author Sheila Attwood.

Private sector pay awards fell to 1.0% in the three months to January, down from 2.0% seen in December. Pay freezes remain common this January, normally a key month for pay setters, making up one-third (33.6%) of settlements. The majority of pay awards were lower in a matched sample with 79.5% of pay settlements made being lower than a year ago for the same employee group, Attwood noted.
