MNI BRIEF: US Dec Housing Starts Highest Since 2006

The pace of U.S. housing starts quickened in December to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.669 million, the highest since 2006, following November's revised 1.578 million (prev 1.547 million). Markets had expected a pace of 1.560 million.

An estimated 1.380 million housing units were started in 2020, up 7% from 1.290 million in 2019.

Building permits climbed to a rate of 1.709 million, up from 1.635 million in November. Forecasts had called for a December seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.605 million.

Completions in December reached 1.417 million, up from 1.223 million in November.
