The Chicago Business Barometer slipped to 42.9 in Jan, the lowest level since
Dec 2015. After two straight months of gains, the index fell further into
contraction, with the three-month average falling to 45.9. All five major
components of the headline index saw a monthly decline, with Order Backlogs
(34.6) leading the fall, followed by New Orders (41.5). Production (42.7) and
Employment (47.0) were muted, while Supplier Deliveries (53.3) is the only
component still above the 50-mark.
