The Chicago Business Barometer fell to 32.3 in May amid the Covid-19 crisis.
Order Backlogs (26.9) saw the largest decline, falling by 10.4pt to the lowest
since Mar 2009. Production (23.7) and New Orders (21.9) eased further, remaining
at 40-year lows, while employment (37.0) edged up marginally after April's
decrease. Supplier Deliveries cooled to 74.3 but remain elevated. Several
companies experienced shutdowns due to Covid-19, leading to sharp falls in
business activity. Moreover, more than 40% of the respondents expect Covid-19 to
have an impact on business plans for more than 9 months.
