MNI Chicago Survey™ Finds Tentative Signs of Improving Demand

After falling further in January, New Orders increased by 3.0 points in the February Chicago Survey™.

  • Despite being the highest since August ’22, the index remains contractive, signalling a ninth successive month of declining orders.
  • Firms noted improved supply of key components boosting orders.
  • One of our February Special Questions asked whether there been signs of an increase in orders recently.
  • 16.7% answered yes and 20.0% answered somewhat, implying initial tentative signs of improving demand.
  • This could see new orders take further steps towards recovery.
  • Firms remain cautious for now, flagging doubts as to whether these initial improvements will lead to further order growth.
