MNI Chicago Survey™: Firms Reluctant to Provide Discounts

US DATA
MNI (London)

The Chicago Business Barometer™ Survey asked firms in April whether they will be looking to reduce selling prices or provide discounts in upcoming months to boost sales.

  • 50% responded no, 32% were unsure. 18% intend to reduce prices, however some flagged that this depended on costs decreasing in coming months.
  • As increased operating expenses from a combination of raw material costs, energy and wages continue to squeeze profit margins, firms voiced reluctance to provide discounts to try to improve order inflows.
  • This reluctance to provide discounts signals that the demand environment in the US manufacturing industry is particularly downtrodden at present.
  • Despite the Chicago PMI™ New Orders subindex increasing to the least contractive level since August 2022, it has failed to move above the 50 breakeven mark since May 2022.
