MNI China Press Digest, May 21: Huawei, China-U.S., Housing

BEIJING (MNI) - The following are highlights from Chinese press reports on
Tuesday:
Chinese tech firm Huawei is well-prepared for a crackdown by US authorities
and its 5G technology will not be impacted, according to the company's founder
and CEO. CCTV cited Huawei chief Ren Zhengfei as saying the 90-day general
license granted by Washington which postpones banning Huawei from buying
American parts and components does not make a lot of sense to the company. Ren
said that even with the crackdown, it was impossible for other 5G developers to
catch up with Huawei in the next two or three years.
The Government controlled People's Daily newspaper has cast doubt on the
sincerity of U.S. trade negotiations, claiming that some American politicians
are hostile towards China and want to suppress the country's development. In a
commentary today, the newspaper says U.S. hostility is a mixture of selfishness,
narrowness and paranoia and reflects a wrong and outdated mindset still mired in
the ideological bias of the Cold War. The Daily warns that repeated strategic
misjudgements between the two big powers will cause traps for both sides.
China's top housing regulator has signalled its intention to curb the
property market and has warned cities with soaring property prices twice in the
last month, according to a report in the Securities Daily today. The newspaper
cites Zhang Bo, the chief analyst at the 58 Anjuke Institute, who says the
warnings show that moves to give local governments more autonomy in customizing
housing policy do not mean the relaxation of regulations.
