MNI DATA BRIEF: Canada Industrial Prices Rise Most Since 1980

OTTAWA (MNI)

Canadian industrial prices rose 14% in April from a year earlier, the fastest pace since 1980 according to a flash government estimate released Thursday, suggesting overall inflation could rise beyond what the central bank has predicted will be a temporary burst in consumer prices of around 3%.

Statistics Canada's Industrial Product Price Index rose on a 166% gain in softwood lumber needed in U.S. homebuilding, the most in records back to 1956. While the BOC has already started to pull back on QE stimulus, sources have told MNI it's unlikely the central bank will take the more aggressive step of actively selling off bond assets as the economy rebounds.
