LONDON (MNI)

Europe's construction industry continues to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic across the euro area, led mainly by an increase in homebuilding, but costs are rising at the fastest pace on record, a survey released Friday shows.

The eu}IHS Markit Eurozone Construction Total Activity Index rose to 50.3 in May from 50.1 in April, suggesting a third consecutive month of expansion for the sector. Higher raw material costs due to widespread shortages among suppliers was cited by many of the 650 respondents.

Usamah Bhatti, Economist at IHS Markit, said widespread reports of shortages of raw materials across the bloc and beyond "placed severe pressure on supply chains, as indicated by a record lengthening in supplier delivery times," contributing to the speed of input cost upturn
