MNI DATA BRIEF: UK Mar PPI Surges In March: ONS

(MNI) London

UK factory gate inflation surged in March, suggesting further upward pressure on consumer prices in months to come. Output PPI rose by 2.0% between February and March, taking prices 11.9% above the same month of last year, the fastest pace of increase since September 2008, up from 10.2% in February.

The metals, machinery and equipment category rose by an annual rate of 18.2%, the highest on record. Core output PPI accelerated to an annual rate of 12.0% from 9.9% in February, the fastest pace on record.

Input PPI also touched a record high, rising by an annual rate of 19.2% from 15.1% in February. That’s well ahead of the 11.1% pace predicted by analysts.
