MNI: Eurozone Q2 Flash GDP Slows Marginally to 0.3% q/q

By Jai Lakhani
LONDON (MNI) - The flash estimate of Eurozone Q2 GDP, released earlier
today, shows that GDP rose by 0.3% quarter-on-quarter (q/q) on a seasonally
adjusted basis, easing slightly from 0.4% in Q1. On a year-on-year (y/y) basis,
the flash release suggests that the Eurozone economy grew by 2.1%, slowing from
the healthier annual expansions recorded in each of the previous two quarters
(2.5% in Q1 and 2.8% in Q4 2017).
The data provided a downside surprise given that quarterly growth came in
0.2pp below that implied by the second quarter composite PMIs. Nevertheless, the
slowdown in growth appears to be largely a result of base effects linked to the
economy's robust expansion in 2017, rather than a more meaningful slowdown.
