- Consumer confidence held steady in Apr, having risen throughout Q1 from a more
than 5-yr low of 87 in Dec
- The recovery has been driven at least partly by the fading of the 'Gilets
Jaunes' protests & associated social unrest that began in late Nov
- Nevertheless, the index remains below its long-run average of 100
- Consumer's opinions regarding their future financial situation continued to
recover in Apr...
- ... but the proportion of households feeling that they need to save increased
sharply (+11pts), albeit remaining below the series average
- Recently announced income tax cuts should help consumer confidence to recover
further in the coming months...
- ... but the extent of any gains is likely to be limited by ongoing concerns
over both the domestic & global economic outlook
