MNI INSIGHT: BOJ May Add Meeting To Discuss Lending Measures

TOKYO (MNI) - The Bank of Japan is likely to call an unscheduled meeting in
the coming weeks to discuss and publish details of possible new measures to
provide funds to financial institutions, with any gathering expected as soon as
bank staff put proposals together, MNI understands.
Looking to further support financing for mainly small and medium-sized
firms, Governor Haruhiko Kuroda has instructed staff to quickly find new
measures and it may look to implement them before the next planned meeting on
June 15/16.
Speaking to legislators on Wednesday, Kuroda said the BOJ is considering
backing financing to institutions that extend loans to small- and medium-sized
firms, adding that he wanted to swiftly implement the measures
"The government's stimulus measures are supporting small- and medium-sized
companies and it is considering strengthening the measures. We are now
considering a measure to back financing by financial institutions to smaller
firms alongside the government's new program to provide support," he said.
