MNI POLICY: China Urges US to Avoid Cold War, Restart Dialogue

MNI (Sydney)

China and the U.S. must not engage in another cold war and become trapped in conflicts, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng wrote in an article published in state media, People's Daily, on Monday.

The two countries should "restart the dialogue mechanism at all levels and fields as soon as possible" to effectively manage risks and ensure that relations are "not out of control or derailed", Le said.

However, China will never accept terms which undermine its sovereignty, security and development interests, and would not allow foreign interference in its core interests in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet, and Xinjiang, said Le.

Blaming China for the Covid-19 pandemic in the U.S. is a "political farce" and would not solve problems, Le said.

No international law supports holding the country where a pandemic is first reported as accountable, he added.
