MNI POLICY: Trust Between US-China At Low Point: Advisor

(MNI) LONDON

Trust levels between U.S. and China are at a low point and other countries have started a smear campaign against China for starting Covid-19 pandemic, said Chen Wenling, the chief economist of the China Center for International Economic Exchange who advised on China's previous 5-year development plans.

The recovery from the pandemic should not be viewed as a zero-sum game among nations, and countries should realize that global dialogues and international trade will help promote international recoveries, said Liu Zhenmin, the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations and a deputy minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China.

China has previously used the phase of "zero-sum game" to accuse the actions taken by the current U.S. administration of stifling China's development.

"Only in cooperating and communicating with each other, can countries find solutions to combat the pandemic and promote economic recovery," Chen told the Sixth Global Think Tank Summit

The policies adopted by countries are now facing severe challenges, as the epidemic has not yet ended, but there is no more room for easing monetary policy and leverage is at historic highs, said Chen adding that China wishes to cooperate with the rest of the world in combating COVID-19 and the impact.

Countries should prioritize investment and infrastructures projects to provide employment opportunities and social protection for all, added Liu, speaking at the same event.
