MNI POLITICAL RISK-AfD Gains Unlikely To Shake German Gov't
The far-right AfD and far-left BSW are set to make gains in two German state elections on 1 September. While these results will garner headlines, they are unlikely to significantly destabilise the federal government
Elections take place on Sunday 1 September in the east German states of Saxony and Thuringia. The far-right Alternative for Germany (Alternative für Deutschland, AfD) and the far-left nationalist Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht, BSW) are both set to make gains at the expense of parties from centre of the political spectrum, notably those included in the federal ‘traffic light’ coalition. Given that the AfD has never come first in a state-level election, the prospect of this outcome has garnered significant media attention domestically and across Europe.
