  • Authorities in the French capital Paris have introduced new rules requiring the wearing of face masks in certain outdoor areas in busy parts of the city, primarily along the River Seine and in tourist hotspots. The country has recorded a spike in infections in the past week.
  • Two of the hardest-hit countries worldwide recorded unenviable landmark numbers at the weekend, with the US now having in excess of 5mn cases, over one-quarter of the global total. Meanwhile, Brazil has recorded over 100,000 fatalities from the virus. The US, Brazil, India, and Russia combined account for 56% of all cases and 46% of fatalities recorded worldwide from the virus.
  • In contrast to the above, New Zealand marked its 100th day without a community transmission of the virus on August 9, with all 21 active cases in the country coming from those arriving in New Zealand. All are in quarantine. PM Jacinda Ardern, facing an election on September 19, announced the formation of a 'travel bubble' with the Cook Islands in the South Pacific by end-2020.
