Today's Major COVID-19 Headlines And Latest Data
- New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on August 17 that the country's general election, scheduled for September 19, would be delayed by one month to October 17 due to the new outbreak of COVID-19 in the country. The number of cases linked to the initial cluster in Auckland has expanded to 58, after a period of 102 days with no new cases. The opposition National Party had called for the delay, arguing restrictions on movement gave Ardern an advantage given that she would be able to make public speeches while they would be unable to campaign.
- The Sarang Jeil Church in South Korea has been linked to a cluster of over 300 new COVID-19 infections, with its lead pastor Jun Kwang-hoon testing positive for the virus after attending an unauthorised anti-government rally in the capital Seoul at the weekend. President Moon Jae-in said the church members at the rally had committed an "unforgivable act that threatens the lives of the people". South Korea has recorded three-figure daily increases in new cases for four days straight for the first time since March 11-14 on August 13-16.
- Peru recorded its highest total of daily new COVID-19 cases on August 16, with 10,143 added to the total. The country has the sixth-highest number of cases worldwide, and sits alongside Latin American peers Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina in the top 15 countries globally for confirmed cases.
