COVID-19 Trends and Developments
- The United States registered its highest ever one-day total of new COVID-19 cases on November 4, and at the same time became the first country to record over 100,000 new cases in a single day. In excess of 50,000 individuals are currently hospitalised with COVID-19 at present, an increase of over 60% from one month ago. The virus is not just limited to certain hotspots, with 34 states reporting over 1,000 cases in a day, a new record.
- England entered a month-long COVID-19 lockdown today, with individuals required to work from home unless that is not possible, while all non-essential shops, pubs, and restaurants are shut. With many businesses re-shuttered, today Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced that the furlough scheme will be extended to end-March 2021 in an effort to avoid a major spike in unemployment. The UK as a whole recorded 25,177 new cases on November 4, the highest 24 hour total since October 21.
- The implementation of new COVID-19 restrictions in Italy has been pushed back by 24 hours to Friday. The delay "will allow everyone to have enough time to organise their activities," according to the government statement. The new measures include a traffic light system of dividing the country by the severity of local outbreaks. On November 4, the average daily increase in cases across the past week in Italy stood at 28,659 cases per day. This is the highest seven-day average new caseload Italy has recorded during the pandemic so far.
