MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS-Greek PM Calls Election For 21 May

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has confirmed that the first round of the country's general election will take place on Sunday 21 May. The new electoral system (put in place by the previous leftist gov't of PM Alexis Tsipras) is a proportional system, doing away with the 'majority bonus' of seats given to the largest party which often ensured one-party gov't rather than coalitions.

  • As such, an outright winner in the first round is unlikely according to current opinion polling, requiring a second round run-off that would take place 2 July at the latest. According to Euractiv, a party would need to secure around 37-38% of the vote in a second-round election to secure a majority administration, an unlikely but not impossible prospect given the current state of opinion polling support for the main parties.
