MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – US Daily Brief 06-05-22

Executive Summary:

  • Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will call a vote to codify reproductive rights next week. The vote will almost certainly fail. The primary objective of the exercise is likely to force GOP Senators to record an official position on abortion for Democrats in purple states to use as campaign ammunition in the midterms.
  • State Department spokesperson Ned Price yesterday answered questions on the reports that Russia is engaged in deliberate attacks on US supply chains. ‘We’re not going to respond to Russian bluster, to Russian propaganda. I think you’ve heard from my counterpart at the Department of Defence that we continue to have the unimpeded ability to flow weapons and security assistance into Ukraine.’
  • Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby claimed yesterday that the US is well positioned to match China’s military ‘pacing’ in Asia and walked back comments from Admiral Richard suggesting that China is preparing an attack on Taiwan by 2027.
  • A bipartisan super-majority of Senators, including 16 Democrats, have endorsed a measure urging that a nuclear agreement with Iran must also address Iranian state sponsored terrorism in the region.
  • The Pentagon and the State Department both addressed speculation that formal requests from Sweden and Finland may be imminent. The primary concern for the two Nordic countries is the period of vulnerability between application and assession.
  • Poll of the Day: Biden preforms well on COVID-19 but continues to suffer poor approval on inflation.
