MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS - US Daily Brief 16-08-22

Executive Summary:

  • President Biden will briefly return from his holiday today to sign the Inflation Reduction Act into law.
  • The Department of Justice has argued against making public the affidavit which led to the FBI search of former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence.
  • Trump’s ‘enemy number one’, Rep Liz Cheney (R-WY) looks set to lose her House seat to Trump-endorsee Harriet Hageman in the Wyoming primaries today.
  • The US military has carried out an (unarmed) nuclear intercontinental ballistic missile test as the People’s Republic of China continues military exercises around the island of Taiwan following a CODEL led by Democrat Senator Ed Markey (D-MA).
  • Iran has presented the European Union with its final thoughts on the revised text of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action proposal. A mutual return to compliance with the 2015 JCPOA accords would allow for Iranian oil to return to markets in return for oversight and restrictions on the Iranian nuclear programme but expectations remain low that the US will accept Iranian demands.
  • Poll of the Day: The August 8 search of Donald Trump’s residence in Florida may lead to a modest increase in support for the former president.
