Executive Summary:

  • Today is the busiest day of the midterm calendar so far with primaries in Idaho, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oregon, and Pennsylvania. Trump endorsements, the struggle for ideological control of the Democrat party, and a late GOP lurch to the right will all be on show today. We provide a breakdown of the races to watch inside.
  • President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will travel to Buffalo, NY today to pay respects to the 10 victims of a racially motivated mass shooting. The shooting is likely to reignite debates over racism and culpability. Rep Liz Cheney: ‘The House GOP leadership has enabled white nationalism, white supremacy, and antisemitism.’
  • Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is in Brussels today to meet with EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen. Yellen will then travel to Germany tomorrow for a meeting of G-7 finance ministers and central bank governors in Bonn.
  • The Senate voted yesterday to advance the ~USD$40 billion Ukraine aid package. A final vote on the bill is likely to take place tomorrow and pass with a strong bipartisan majority.
  • 11:00 ET 16:00 BST: Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will address a joint session of Congress.
  • Poll of the Day: An NBC report has shown that Democrat voters are more likely to back a progressive candidate over a moderate candidate in primary elections today.
