MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS-Week Ahead 5-11 September

Monday 5 September:

  • United Kingdom: The governing centre-right Conservative Party announced the identity of its next leader following a lengthy campaign to win the support of an 172k party members over the summer. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss won the contest, defeating former Chancellor Rishi Sunak by 57.4% to 42.6%.
  • OPEC+: OPEC joint ministerial monitoring meeting and OPEC+ ministers’ meetings take place in Vienna. Uncertainty over whether the organisation will keep production levels stable in October or opt for a small reduction in supply (~100k/bpd) to boost prices. Comes as concerns about an economic slowdown across developed and emerging markets amid rising inflation have hit prices.
  • United States:President Joe Biden is due to visit and deliver speeches in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as part of a soft launch of the Democrats midterm elections campaign. Both states have key races taking place, with the Democrats seeking to take US Senate seats from the Republicans in both locations.
  • EU-Ukraine: An EU-Ukraine Association Council meeting takes place in Brussels. Ukrainian PM Denys Shmyhal and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell will take part. The meeting will allow the two sides to discuss the implementation of the Association Agreement, and the overall situation of EU-Ukrainian cooperation amidst the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
  • United States, Canada: Public holiday for Labor Day.
