Monday 9 September:
- European Union: Former Italian PM and ECB president Mario Draghi presented his long-awaited report on competitiveness in the European Union at a press conference at 1100CET (0500ET, 1000BST). He was joined by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The report looks at five main areas: (i) increasing productivity, (ii) reducing dependencies, (iii) climate change, (iv) social inclusion, and (v) “sector-specific” proposals for ten “major sectors” of the EU economy.
- United States:The House of Representatives returns from its summer recess, with the House Rules Committee from 1600ET set to prepare a number of bills for the floor, including the six-month continuing resolution that would extend government funding through to 28 March 2025. The bill could be voted on Wednesday 11 September at the earliest. Democrats have called out the bill, put forward by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) for being ‘inadequate’, with a number of programs missed out, while Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned that a six-month CR would leave the US behind the pace in its National Defense Strategy.
