MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – Weekly COVID-19 Tracker – Jan 6

Editor's Note: In this edition we include two new charts showing the number of COVID-19 vaccinations carried out globally and in the top 20 countries with most vaccinations completed, and the 20 countries with the greatest number of vaccines administered per 100 head of their respective populations. See page 2 for charts.

COVID-19 Headlines:

  • On 6 January the European Medicines Agency gave its approval for the rollout of the Moderna vaccine in the European Union. Will now have to be approved by the European Commission before distribution begins.
  • The United Kingdom's constituent nations enter a full COVID-19 lockdown from midnight January 7 as cases soar across the country. The so-called 'British variant' of the virus is thought to be around 70 times as transmissible as the more common variant of COVID-19.
  • The World Health Organization stated on January 6 that two of the group's scientists had been blocked from entering China. Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was "very disappointed with this news" adding that the trip to the city of Wuhan (the epicentre of the pandemic) was "a priority for the WHO". The WHO's relationship with China has been criticised by the Trump administration, leading to the US' withdrawal from the group in 2020. This decision is set to be reversed by President Elect Joe Biden once he is inaugurated.
