MNI POLITICAL RISK - Harris Speech To Close Out DNC

US
  • Vice President Kamala Harris will take the stage in Chicago this evening to formally accept the Democratic Party presidential nomination and close out the four-day party convention. Yesterday, VP nominee Governor Tim Walz (D-MN) delivered a speech which, like the Obamas on Tuesday, framed Harris as a challenger, rather than a legacy incumbent of the Biden administration.
  • Harris’ speech is expected to be light on policy, but she may provide some clues on how she will build out her agenda over the coming weeks. In particular, on inflation and the economy, two areas where Trump retains an edge and her tentative proposals have been received sceptically by economists.
  • Former President Donald Trump appeared at his first outdoor rally since last month’s attempted assassination, blaming Harris and President Biden for the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and accusing the White House of “fraudulently manipulating” jobs data.
  • Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is widely expected to withdraw from the presidential race and endorse Trump.
  • Nearly half of all corporate election contributions in 2024 have come from the crypto sector.
  • President Biden urged Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to accept a ceasefire deal with Hamas ahead of the resumption of talks today.
  • Ukraine and Russia both lack the military capacity to mount major offensives, according to a Pentagon assessment.
  • The US has drafted sanctions on around 60 Venezuelan government officials.
  • Poll of the Day: Harris gains with core Democrat voters while also appealing to independents.
