MNI POLITICAL RISK - Harris To Announce VP As Soon As Today
Executive Summary:
- Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic Party presidential nominee, could announce her VP running mate as soon as today, ahead of a first joint appearance of the ticket tomorrow. Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro (D-PA) is considered the favourite by analysts and betting markets but is facing some opposition from progressives.
- Conventional wisdom suggests that a vice-presidential selection is rarely consequential to a presidential election outcome, but considering the exceptionally tight polling, any gains on the margins could be critical in November. Her selection may also be especially salient considering former President Donald Trump’s VP selection - JD Vance – has had a turbulent start and drawn criticism for failing to expand the appeal of Trump’s ticket.
- Trump has proposed a presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, hosted by Fox News, on September 4 – countering the previously arranged Biden-Trump second debate date of September 10 on ABC.
- High-ranking Senate Republicans have cautioned against former President Donald Trump’s plan to impose a 60% tariff regime on Chinese goods and a blanket 10% tariffs on all goods entering the country.
- A bipartisan and bicameral group of a Senators and House representatives have unveiled legislation that would provide for "regulatory sandboxes" that permit experimentation with artificial intelligence.
- Secretary of State Antony Blinken told fellow G7 foreign ministers that Iran and/or Hezbollah could attack Israel as soon as today.
- Poll of the Day: The presidential race is now a “toss-up” following a polling surge for Vice President Kamala Harris.
