MNI POLITICAL RISK - Johnson Unveils Israel/Ukraine Aid Plan

US
  • House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has unveiled his long-awaited plan to move foreign aid. Johnson is expected to release the final text of the four-bill bundle today with a vote tentatively scheduled for Friday. Johnson will likely have to lean on Democrats to pass a rule as it is unclear there is sufficient support for any of the constituent bills under suspension.
  • As the package includes Ukraine aid, there is a credible risk that hardline Republican Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) could force a vote to oust Johnson. This morning, Greene issued a statement criticising the plan but declined to explicitly threaten triggering her motion to vacate.
  • Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is expected to press her fellow finance ministers today to back new US sanctions on Iran.
  • The House overwhelmingly passed legislation aimed at countering China-Iran crude oil transactions but the Senate may be less inclined to support measures which would further squeeze oil markets.
  • A bipartisan group of Senators are “quietly working” to secure the 60 votes required to pass the USD$78 billion Wyden-Smith tax bill.
  • USTR Katherine Tai will provide testimony to Congress today on President Biden’s 2024 trade agenda.
  • President Biden has been given a campaign boost after data showed that the homicide rate in major US cities is falling rapidly.
  • Argentina firms as a US ally under President Javier Milei.
  • Poll of the Day: Betting markets show Biden with an early electoral college advantage over Trump.
