MNI: Tokyo Sees Daily High of 224 Covid-19 Cases: Japan Press

MNI (London)
TOKYO (MNI) - Tokyo recorded new daily high of 224 Covid-19 cases on
Thursday, marking the biggest single-day increase, local media reported.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been focusing on young people working
in nightlife districts, but infections have been on the rise among family
members and restaurant diners.
The government on May 25 lifted the state of emergency, accelerating the
number of positive readings and increasing pressure on Tokyo Governor Yuriko
Koike, who recently said the coronavirus is the most pressing issue facing the
city of 11 million eligible voters, which accounts for a fifth of the nation's
economy.
Koike added that she was not considering a return to blanket business
restrictions and called for a targeted approach, without elaborating.
Global infections have surpassed 12 million, according to Johns Hopkins
University, local median reported. The U.S. still leads the world it registering
another single-day record for number of cases, followed by Brazil and India.
