U.S. weekly jobless claims filed through May 23 reached 2.1 million after
climbing to 2.4 million through May 16 in the Labor Department's weekly
unemployment insurance report. Continuing claims, counting unemployed workers
who have received at least one week of benefits, slowed to 21 million after
reaching an all-time high of 25 million last week. Filings for Pandemic
Unemployment Assistance, a program established as part of the CARES Act, reached
1.2 million for the week ending May 23. PUA claims through May 16 were revised
down to 1.2 million from 2.2 million, correcting a reporting error.
