Moderate Democrat Cuellar Claims Victory In TX-28 Against Leftist Cisneros

US

Moderate nine-term incumbent Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX) has claimed that he has won the Democratic primary for Texas' 28th congressional district, tweeting that he has won by the razor-thin margin of 177 votes over leftist progressive candidate Jessica Cisneros.

  • Cuellar is seen as being on the right of the Democratic party, and his primary contest against Cisneros became a bitter battle between the moderate and progressive wings of the party. Prominent liberal Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) referred to Cuellar as a 'pro-NRA, anti-choice incumbent under investigation' just a day after the Ulvade school shooting that took place a short distance from the TX-28 district.
  • The main victory for progressive Democrats in Tuesday's primaries came in Georgia's 7th congressional district where liberal pro-gun control candidate Lucy McBath comfortably defeated freshman Congresswoman Carolyn Bordeaux - a centrist who's anti-gun control stance and blocking of President Biden's Build Back Better infrastructure plan gained her the ire of the left of the party.
