Morning Summary: Slight Disagreements Over CNB rates trajectory

  • Covid cases continue to drop with the 7D SMA of daily new cases down from 6,300 to 4,000 in the past week. New Health Minister Arenberger is expected to brief press on Covid19 development at 2pm (London time).
  • There are little disagreements over the trajectory of CNB short term rates in the coming months; while some sell-side institutions are pricing in one to two hikes (25bps) later this year (between September and December), others remain confident that no action will take place this year and the CNB will gradually hike in 2022.
  • Housing market is not showing any signs of overheating; house prices rose by 8.9% YoY in Q4 20 following a 8.4% increase in Q3 amid strong demand while supply remains limited due to the weak construction activity.
  • Industrial production came in lower than expected at -2.6% in Feb (vs. 0.4%) yesterday, and foreign trade ended in a 22.5bn CZK surplus in February (vs. 26.2bn expected).
  • Next important data to watch is CPI inflation on April 13, expected to rise to 2.3% in March (from 2.1% in Feb).
