Morocco Plans New LNG Import Terminal at Nador

LNG

Morocco is planning an LNG import terminal at Nador West Med on the Mediterranean coast in the short term and to connect it with a new pipeline to the idled Maghreb Europe gas link, the energy transition ministry said in a statement, cited by Bloomberg.

  • The ministry did not publish information on the planned capacity or timeline for the terminal.
  • Moroccan ministries and other state agencies signed a MoU to launch Morocco’s gas infrastructure roadmap, which will also support gas pipeline projects.
  • In the long-term, the kingdom is planning to have several entry points for LNG imports, gas storages and pipelines.
  • Gas normally flows through the MEG line from Algeria to Spain via Morocco. But Algeria stopped sending fuel through it late last year when it cut diplomatic ties with Morocco because of a spat over Western Sahara.
