Moscow Look to Tighten Grip on Donetsk With Administrative Push

  • Senior Russian Officials have been appointed as members of the Donetsk People’s Republic separatist movement for the first time in the Ukraine war, adding to the growing signs that Russia intend to permanently occupy captured territories, according to the Moscow Times. The most notable position was taken up by former Russian Industry and Trade Ministry department head Vitaly Khotsenko as the head of the breakaway region's Council of Ministers.
  • RBC Daily flag that this week’s US trade balance data showed that deliveries of goods from the US to Russia hit a record low – with just $89mln in goods sent to Russia.
  • Yesterday, defense minister Shoigu said that Russian Railways and the military had extended 750 miles of track in southeastern Ukraine – extending their grip on infrastructure in the region and allowing Moscow to build a land bridge between Russia and Crimea. According to the New York Times, the next steps include introducing the RUB and the appointment of local officials.
  • Vedomosti write that 70% of Russian regions are expected to record a decline in economic activity this year, which indicates the beginning of a recession across Russia.
  • The government are to hold a formal meeting today (no set time) with the agenda including financial market regulation, utility supply, SME support and a number of other topics.
