Move Forward And Senators Prepared To Talk

THAILAND

The coalition that has so far been agreed will still need support of another 66 parliamentarians to have its preferred PM candidate Pita approved. Move Forward, the winning party, has said that it is prepared to talk to senators to calm fears and gain their approval. The senate is aligned with the military. A couple have already said that they won’t support Move Forward’s candidate Pita as it wants to reform laws associated with the monarchy but others have said they will look at candidates and decide if they are “suitable” but that they need to earn their support. But according to the Bangkok Post another said “In principle, senators should respect the decision of the majority of MPs.”

  • Move Forward is looking to have a coalition with Pheu Thai, Thai Sang Thai, Prachachart, Seri Ruam Thai and the Fair Party holding 310 seats in the House of Reps.
  • Pheu Thai’s Srettha has called on other parties to support Move Forward’s leader Pita as the next PM. This would require less if any support from the senate.
  • The Bangkok Post is reporting that Pheu Thai, who came second in Sunday’s election, has denied forming a coalition deal with Bhumjaithai, the third largest party. Pheu Thai made it clear that they are joining a coalition with leading party Move Forward as that is who the people chose. Deputy Leader Sutin said that he thinks the government will be formed over the next month and will be governing in about two months’ time.
  • The United Thai Party of outgoing PM Prayut has said that it is ready to be in opposition while Prayut himself has remained silent on his future.
