Move Forward Party Won't Support Pheu Thai's PM Candidate

THAILAND

Election front-runners Move Forward Party (MFP) announced that they will not vote in favour of a motion to install Pheu Thai Party (PTP) candidate Srettha Thavisin as the next Prime Minister after discussing the matter internally.

  • MFP Secretary General Chaithawat Tulathon announced this during a special press conference, noting that the new coalition led by Pheu Thai is "against people's will" and "won't yield benefits to voters." Chaithawat added that the decision has been taken unanimously by all MFP lawmakers.
  • The key implication of the MFP's decision is that Pheu Thai will need to garner more support from junta-appointed senators, which decreases its leverage in negotiations with pro-miitary establishment. At the same time, conceding too much ground to the pro-military camp would further increase the disillusionment among PTP voters.
