Muted Budget Reaction Largely Positive For Sunak Gov't

UK

The 15 March Budget statement from Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt delivered largely what the media and markets had anticipated, limiting any significant political noise around the event. The largely muted reception to Hunt’s statement will likely be viewed as a positive by the administration of PM Rishi Sunak, which is attempting to portray an image of stable and sensible economic governance to reassure markets and voters.

  • Snap opinion polling by YouGov carried out on Budget Day showed that half of respondents were unsure as to the impact of the Budget on the British economy.
    • Asked about whether the measures would be good for the economy, 28% said it would be good or very good, 22% bad or very bad, with 50% unsure.
    • Asked if they support the measures, over half (54%) said they did not know, with 28% in favour and 18% opposed.
    • Finally, asked whether they believe the Budget measures will assist in curtailing inflation, 49% did not know with, 22% saying that it would help and 28% saying that it would hinder the fight against inflation.
