N. Korea's Spy Satellite Launch Fails After "Abnormal Flight"

NORTH KOREA

Yonhap News Agency reports that according to South Korean military, a "space launch vehicle" fired by North Korea fell into the Yellow Sea after an "abnormal flight." Pyongyang confirmed the failure, noting that its "Cholima-1" rocket carrying a military spy satellite "Malligyong-1" fell into the sea.

  • North Korean state broadcaster KCNA said that the country is planning to conduct a second launch as soon as possible after the first attempt failed due to the "abnormal starting of the second-stage engine."
  • South Koran military said that it has managed to retrieve part of the North's rocket. The South may use the recovered part to gain more insight into the makeup and technological advancement of the rocket.
  • South Korea convened an emergency session of its National Security Council and condemned the launch as a "serious provocation" which threatens peace on the Korean Peninsula.
  • A South Korean expert told Sankei that Kim Jong-un appears determined to acquire spy satellites and reportedly refrained from punishing engineers involved in prior failed tests, instead offering them attractive incentives to continue works.
