N. Korea Test-Fires Possible Ballistic Missile

NORTH KOREA

Japan's Ministry of Defence is gathering information about a possible launch of a ballistic missile by North Korea, NHK reports. Officials believe that the projectile has already landed in waters outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone.

  • The launch comes two days after North Korea test-fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile over the territory of Japan, triggering an emergency alarm system.
  • The U.S., Japan and South Korea subsequently held their own drills to deter Pyongyang from further escalation and demonstrate their readiness to respond.
  • North Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement to protest the redeployment of a U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to the Korean peninsula.
  • Japan's Prime Minister Kishida and South Korean President Yoon are set to speak on the phone later today to discuss North Korean provocations.
