NATGAS: German Gas Consumption Up 24.3% Last Week Driven by Industrial Demand

German natural gas consumption in the week to Aug. 11 increased 24.3% from the previous week and was 8.7% below the 2018-21 average, Bnetza data showed. Industrial demand rose 29.3% from the previous week while demand from households and small businesses was up just 0.5%.

  • Industrial gas consumption rose to 1125GWh/d last week compared to 2023 levels of 997GWh but still 7.7% below the 2018-21 average. Gas consumption from electricity generation is also included in the data.
  • Demand from households and small businesses edged up to 186GWh/d last week, compared to 252GWh/d in 2023 and 13.9% below the 2018-21 average.
  • German gas demand stood 27.5% below the 2018-21 average the week prior.
  • Natural gas inventories in Germany are up to 92.17% full on Aug. 13 from 90.48% a week earlier with below normal daily injections since July 23.
