NATGAS: Global Gas Demand to Reach 4200bcm This Year After 3% Growth in H1: IEA

NATGAS

Global gas consumption is set to reach a record high of 4200bcm this year after growing by an estimated 3% yoy in the first half of 2024, according to IEA analyst Greg Molnar.

  • Natural gas markets are back on a clear expansion trajectory after the gas supply crisis of 2022 and the gradual rebalancing in 2023.
  • Asia accounts for over 60% of the recovery in global gas demand. China and India both showed double-digit growth rates, up by 10% yoy in H1 2024.
  • Colder weather boosted gas demand in Eurasia, up by nearly 5% yoy, while North America gas demand grew by almost 2% yoy amid record high gas burn in the power sector.
  • European gas consumption however continued to decline, primarily due to collapsing gas-to-power demand (down by almost 20%) with the rapid expansion of renewables.
  • The industrial sector accounted for nearly two-thirds of growth in H1 2024 partly still supported by recovery from the 2022 gas crisis.
