NATGAS: LNG Imports to Taiwan Surged 9% y/y to Record in July

NATGAS

LNG imports to Taiwan surged 9% y/y to a record in July at nearly 2m tons with a boost to power consumption due to recent hot weather, according to Bloomberg.

  • Taiwan is also likely to become more reliant on LNG with the closure of nuclear power plants. The closure of the last nuclear reactor is expected next year after the second to last reactor closed last weekend.
  • Peak power load rose to a record high earlier this month driven by above-normal temperatures.
  • Hot weather in Asia is helping to attract global gas supplies away from Europe where industrial demand remains muted and renewables generation is growing.
  • LNG terminals in Taiwan were operating above nameplate capacity in July, according to BNEF, ahead of an expansion to the Taichung terminal and third terminal slated to start in 2025.
